OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health With Bold Claims for All

OpenAI is launching ChatGPT Health to all users in the United States starting Thursday, expanding access to a feature that lets people sync their medical records and fitness data directly with the chatbot. In a briefing ahead of the rollout, Ashley Alexander, OpenAI’s vice president of health product, claimed the company’s models “are now capable of reasoning at levels that are better than clinician level.”

Pressed for specifics on how OpenAI’s performance compares to human doctors, health lead Karan Singhal hedged that statement. He said he would “temper” the assertion, but noted that “individual studies have been pointing in that direction,” citing research from Harvard and Stanford. The timing is notable: just a day earlier, a Florida pastor sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT gave him “extremely dangerous medical recommendations” that led him to delay treatment for a pulmonary embolism.

This broader release follows the recent launch of GPT-5.6 Sol, which OpenAI calls its “strongest model yet for health.” ChatGPT Health will operate on these latest models. The key change: users can now ask questions about their connected medical information directly in the main chat interface, instead of needing to open a separate health tab. ChatGPT will request permission before using health data to personalize responses, with the company stating that “all conversations are encrypted at rest and at transit,” and that health-connected data “receives additional encryption protection.”

Users retain control over what health data they share, including options like post-visit notes, care team notes, lab results, and medications. Supported sources include health providers, Apple Health, Weight Watchers, MyFitnessPal, and Function. OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT Health “supports, not replaces, professional care.” The feature is rolling out to all logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older on web and iOS, across free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
