Xbox Disc-to-Digital Conversion System Could Launch Next Week

Xbox Insider program participants noticed something unusual this week: no new console update for the Xbox Series X|S arrived on schedule. The pause was unexpected, especially after Asha Sharma previously promised bi-weekly updates. But according to Brad Rossetti, head of Xbox Insider, the delay is intentional and the next release will be worth the wait.

While Rossetti kept details under wraps, Jez Corden claims to know exactly what’s coming. The feature, code-named Project Positron, is Microsoft’s system for converting physical game discs into digital licenses. This initiative arrives as PlayStation prepares to phase out disc-based support by January 2028, signaling a broader industry shift.

Rossetti’s social media tease sparked heavy speculation, but Corden responded with a simple, telling phrase: “Positron commeth.”

Here’s what we know so far: Positron will allow players to insert supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs and receive a permanent digital license tied to their Microsoft account. This isn’t the same as keeping the disc forever, but it offers two key advantages. First, players can still lend physical games to friends. Second, the second-hand market can survive because the digital license can be transferred to a new owner when the game is sold.

If an account changes, the game becomes inaccessible through the previous account. But the disc’s license can be reassigned, preserving the ability to trade or sell used games.
