For years, physical Steam gift cards offered the most tangible way to buy a game from a store shelf. Now, Valve is officially ending its retail gift card program, citing a persistent and costly battle against scammers who have exploited the payment method for anonymous fraud.
The quiet announcement first surfaced in a recent update to a Steam support page, as noted by PC Guide. Since introducing retail cards in 2013, Valve has faced an ongoing struggle with scammers who target victims by instructing them to purchase gift cards and hand over the security PIN. Once obtained, those card details are resold at a discount on grey market platforms, effectively laundering stolen funds through a nearly untraceable system.
Valve attempted to curb abuse by limiting redemption rates and availability, and by adding a clear warning on the cards themselves: “Never share a pin via email, social media or over the phone.” Despite these measures, the company now concedes that “scammers have adapted” and “continue to have an impact on Steam customers and other unsuspecting individuals.” Rather than continue fighting a losing battle, Valve writes that it has “made the difficult decision to end the Steam Gift Card program at retail stores.”
Existing physical gift cards can still be redeemed, and retailers may sell any remaining stock already in their inventory. However, Valve expects those supplies to be fully depleted by the end of 2026, as no new cards will be produced. Steam users will still have digital gift card options for gifting purposes, but the era of buying a physical Steam card at a checkout counter is coming to a close.
