Microsoft Ending Office 2019 Mac Support Next Month

▼ Summary

– Microsoft’s Office 2019 for Mac will stop working in July because the company is not renewing a certificate that validates licenses.
– Users must buy Office 2024 or a Microsoft 365 subscription to keep editing documents after the certificate expires.
– Microsoft previously promised Office 2019 apps would continue to function, but later removed that claim from its support note.
– Starting July 13th, Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac will enter “reduced functionality mode,” allowing file viewing but not editing or saving.
– Microsoft is not providing a certificate update for Office 2019 for Mac, as its support ended in 2023, but Office 2021 will get an update.

Microsoft is pulling the plug on Office 2019 for Mac next month, leaving users of the one-time purchase suite with a hard choice: upgrade or lose the ability to edit documents. The software giant has confirmed it will not renew a critical certificate used to validate Office licenses, effectively bricking core editing functions for anyone still running the 2019 version.

The company had previously assured users in 2023 that “all your Office 2019 apps will continue to function” after the end of support. However, that assurance was quietly revised last month. The updated note now reads: “Rest assured that all your Office 2019 apps won’t lose any data” , a subtle but significant shift in language.

Starting July 13th, both Office 2019 for Mac and Office 2021 for Mac will slip into reduced functionality mode.” In this state, users can open existing files but cannot edit, save, or create new documents. The restriction applies across all major apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

There is a lifeline for Office 2021 users: Microsoft is issuing a certificate update for that version, which remains supported until October 13th, 2026. But Office 2019 for Mac receives no such reprieve. “Office 2019 for Mac reached end of support on October 10, 2023, and no longer receives updates,” Microsoft states. “Because Office 2019 cannot be updated to the required version, this issue cannot be resolved by updating or reinstalling Office 2019 for Mac.”

The only way forward for affected users is to purchase Office 2024 or subscribe to Microsoft 365.

The certificate issue also impacts older versions of Microsoft 365 apps on Mac and iOS, as noted by JimmyTech. However, those users can resolve the problem with a simple update.

Microsoft routinely ends support for older software, and running outdated versions always carries risk. Still, this decision stands out for its severity. Breaking the core functionality of a product that users paid a one-time license fee for , and doing so through a certificate expiration rather than a gradual feature sunset , feels like an unusually aggressive push toward subscription-based services.
