EU’s DMA Delays Siri AI for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27

Apple has officially unveiled Siri AI, a completely redesigned version of its voice assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. However, due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) , the company will not be able to launch Siri AI in the European Union alongside iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Over recent months, EU regulators rejected every proposal Apple put forward to bring the feature to the region while still supporting third-party virtual assistants securely.

“We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Our hope is to eventually bring Siri AI to the EU, and we will continue to engage with EU regulators on a path forward. However, their refusal to engage constructively on solutions that preserve privacy and security means we do not currently have a timeline for Siri AI’s availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU.”

When iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 launch later this year, users in the EU will miss out on Siri AI and its advanced capabilities. These include a dedicated app for revisiting conversations, an expanded Visual Intelligence experience, integrated writing tools, a Siri mode in Camera on iOS, and other features announced at WWDC26. Because Siri AI on watchOS 27 requires a paired iPhone with Siri AI, EU users will also lose access to the feature on their Apple Watches.

On a positive note, EU users will still be able to access Siri AI on macOS 27 and visionOS 27. However, developers based in the EU will not be able to test or integrate the new Siri AI features into their apps on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or watchOS 27.

Siri AI is designed with privacy at its core, relying on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to extend iPhone-level security into the cloud. But under what Apple describes as an extreme interpretation of the DMA, EU regulators would require the company to grant any virtual assistant direct access to users’ private data and the ability to control other installed applications as soon as Siri AI becomes available in the EU. Apple argues this would happen without the essential protections needed to keep users and their information safe.

According to EU regulators, the DMA mandates that Apple give any AI system nearly unlimited access to a user’s device and the power to act autonomously without ongoing user visibility or control. This includes the ability to read and send messages, make purchases, access files, and execute actions across any app. Security researchers have already demonstrated that AI systems can be hijacked to steal personal data, such as passwords and photos, and to permanently alter files and account settings without user consent. As AI capabilities expand, these risks are growing in frequency and scope.

To address these dangers, Apple proposed a solution called Trusted System Agent , an intermediary that would allow virtual assistants to safely access the same features as Siri AI on EU devices. The company also outlined a plan to launch Siri AI in the EU while gradually implementing this new solution over an 18-month period. The European Commission rejected this proposal, along with every other option Apple presented.

Apple says it will continue working to bring these features to the European Union as safely as possible. But given the clear risks to EU users and the regulators’ failure to acknowledge them, there is currently no timeline for Siri AI’s availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU.
