Apple uses AI to solve Safari’s extension problem

Apple is tackling one of Safari’s long-standing shortcomings with a fresh AI-powered approach. While competing browsers boast vast extension libraries, Safari has historically lagged behind, largely because of Apple’s strict developer requirements. Now, the company is flipping the script by letting users essentially vibe code their own extensions using plain language.

During a demo shared by Apple, the company showcased a new feature where users can simply describe an extension they need. For instance, one prompt read: “Save and track cooking recipes from around the web. Click the toolbar button to see your saved recipes and add notes to each.” From that description, Safari’s Apple Intelligence engine automatically generated a fully functional “Recipe Keeper” extension.

This move could dramatically expand Safari’s extension ecosystem without relying solely on third-party developers. By lowering the barrier to entry, Apple is betting that user-generated tools will fill the gaps that have kept Safari from competing with Chrome and Firefox on customization. Whether this AI-driven extension builder delivers reliable, secure results remains to be seen, but it marks a significant shift in how Apple approaches browser functionality.
