Cash App is bringing a touch of magic to everyday transactions with the launch of its new Tap-to-Pay Wand on Thursday. Priced at $25, the device draws inspiration from a viral social media trend where users hid tap-and-pay credit cards inside homemade wands to make payments. Now, Cash App offers an official version, marking the debut of its expanded NFC-powered tag hardware lineup, with more form factors expected in the coming months.
These tags connect directly to the Cash App Card and are compatible with any outlet that accepts Visa’s tap-to-pay platform. Activating the wand is straightforward: link the hardware to the app, and no minimum balance is required for it to function. The wand also includes a keychain ring, making it easy to attach to a bag or clip onto clothing, offering a convenient payment option for situations like concerts or sporting events where digging out a phone feels cumbersome.
Beyond practicality, the wand taps into a sense of whimsy. Paying with a wand adds a playful element to shopping, especially for occasions like birthday outings, which Cash App believes will resonate with younger users. Each transaction triggers instant spend notifications, and users can lock or unlock the tag directly from the app. If a tag is lost, deactivation is a simple process, and the company says it actively monitors fraud on tag payments to ensure security.
“While digital wallets are invisible and physical cards are often buried in wallets, Cash App Tags are just the opposite. We see a unique opportunity here to make payments visible and social for the first time,” said Thomas Templeton, Hardware lead at Block, in a statement.
Cash App plans to release additional tag designs, including limited-edition drops, in the months ahead, with some versions becoming permanently available this summer. This launch is part of a broader strategy to attract Gen Z users, following the introduction of teen accounts in 2021 and a parent-controlled debit card for children aged six to 12 earlier this year.
