Kickstarter reverses its new mature content policy

▼ Summary

– Kickstarter eliminated its new content guidelines that prohibited certain sexual wellness products and restored an earlier version.
– The company’s COO Sean Leow issued an apology letter confirming the new rules were influenced by the payment processor Stripe.
– Stripe’s requirements, based on its own legal considerations, primarily drove the updates to Kickstarter’s mature content rules.

Just over a week after introducing controversial updates, Kickstarter has officially reversed its new mature content policy and reinstated its previous guidelines. The company’s about-face comes in response to widespread criticism over rules that banned, among other things, “sexual wellness products that are not designed for insertion or penetration and are not marketed primarily for sexual gratification.”

In a public apology published today, Kickstarter COO Sean Leow acknowledged the misstep and revealed that the now-scrapped policy changes were largely driven by requirements from its payment processor, Stripe. Leow explained that Stripe operates under its own legal obligations, which influenced the language and scope of the updated restrictions. However, the backlash from creators and backers made it clear that the new rules were too broad and damaging to the platform’s community.

“The updates to the rules were primarily driven by requirements from our payments processor, Stripe,” Leow wrote in the apology letter. He went on to say that the company would rethink how it communicates and implements such changes in the future, emphasizing that Kickstarter values its diverse creator base and will work to avoid similar controversies moving forward.

The reversal means that the previous, more lenient content guidelines are now back in effect. Creators who feared the loss of certain project categories can breathe easier, though the episode highlights the growing tension between platform policies and third-party payment processor rules. For now, Kickstarter has chosen to prioritize its community over compliance, but the underlying pressures from financial partners are unlikely to disappear entirely.
