Google is stepping back into the smart glasses arena with a fresh approach. At the Google I/O conference on Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled a new collaboration with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to develop a line of AI-powered glasses. These devices, designed in partnership with Samsung, will be compatible with both Android and iOS platforms. According to Google, they are slated for release later this year.

The company is branding these as “audio glasses,” emphasizing voice control as the primary interface. Users can issue verbal commands to access Google’s ecosystem of apps and services, including Gemini. During a demonstration on Tuesday, a Google employee ordered a coffee simply by speaking to the glasses, which then executed the task when synced.

This marks Google’s latest foray into a category it pioneered with Google Glass years ago, a product that notoriously spawned the derogatory term “glassholes.” The landscape has shifted significantly since then. Today, major players like Meta, along with a growing number of startups and smaller firms, are investing heavily in wearable tech and AI eyewear.
