Intel’s $600 Wildcat Lake Laptop Doubles MacBook Neo’s RAM and Battery Life

▼ Summary

– Intel’s new Wildcat Lake “Core Series 3” laptops, such as the Honor X14, are now available in retail, starting around $600 to compete with Apple’s MacBook Neo.
– The Honor X14 features a Core 5 320 chip with 6 cores, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, offering double the memory and storage of the entry-level MacBook Neo.
– The MacBook Neo has a superior Retina display with higher resolution and brightness, while the Honor X14 offers more ports and a larger 60Whr battery.
– The Honor X14 is slightly larger and heavier than the MacBook Neo, but its pricing in China (as low as 3999 CNY) suggests a US retail price around $599.
– The article notes that independent reviews are still needed to evaluate battery life and performance of these new Intel-powered laptops.

The first Intel Wildcat Lake laptops have officially hit the retail market, and they are coming for Apple’s MacBook Neo with a surprisingly aggressive price-to-performance ratio. The Honor X14, powered by the new Core Series 3 chip, is already available in China for under $600, and it packs features that directly challenge Apple’s entry-level offering.

Apple shook the PC world earlier this year with the MacBook Neo, a $599 laptop that brought the A18 Pro chip, the same silicon found in iPhones, into a premium aluminum chassis. It was a clear signal to Intel and its partners that the mainstream laptop segment needed to step up. While PC makers have long offered budget-friendly machines, they often sacrificed build quality or performance to hit a low price. Wildcat Lake changes that equation.

The Honor X14 is a strong example of what this new architecture enables. It runs on the Core 5 320, a 6-core processor clocked up to 4.6 GHz with 6 MB of cache and a 35W TDP. The integrated GPU features 2 Xe3 cores, and the system comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5X-7467 MT/s memory, double what the base MacBook Neo offers. Storage is a 512 GB SSD, compared to the Neo’s 256 GB starting point.

Where the MacBook Neo still leads is the display. Honor uses a 1920×1200 LCD panel with 60 Hz refresh and 300 nits brightness, while Apple’s Retina display delivers a sharper 2408×1506 resolution and 500 nits peak brightness. But Honor counters with a more generous port selection: one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C, two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, an HDMI port, and an audio jack. The 60Whr battery is also nearly double the capacity of the Neo’s 36.5Whr unit, promising significantly longer runtime.

Physically, the Honor X14 measures 311.5 x 215.5 x 16.9 mm and weighs 1.39 kg, while the MacBook Neo is slimmer at 297.5 x 197 x 12.7 mm and lighter at 1.23 kg. Honor hasn’t detailed the chassis materials, but a premium finish would be essential to truly compete with Apple’s all-aluminum build.

Pricing is where the Wildcat Lake strategy becomes most compelling. In China, the Honor X14 is listed for as low as 3999 CNY at JD.com, which is under $600 US. The official Honor store lists it at 4399 CNY, roughly $645 US. If similar pricing translates to the US market, a $599 retail price seems realistic, and entry-level models using the Core 3 Wildcat Lake chips could dip closer to $500.

Intel has clearly found a credible answer to the MacBook Neo. But the real test will come from independent reviews, as battery life and real-world performance remain unverified. For now, the Wildcat Lake lineup looks like a serious contender in the budget laptop space.
