It has always been my ambition to report on the truly monumental stories. Today, I’m not covering the big news,I’m covering the BIG news. Asha Sharma, the CEO of XBOX (we’ll explain the capitalization in a moment), made a startling announcement on X: Xbox is now officially XBOX. She apparently wasn’t joking about going “deeper in the areas that matter most.”
On May 13, Sharma posted a poll on X with a straightforward query: “Xbox or XBOX?” The votes have been tallied, and XBOX won decisively, beating “Xbox” by a two-to-one margin. Was this a mere joke? A playful nod to billionaire Elon Musk’s habit of polling his audience only to disregard the results? Not this time. Sharma appears fully committed, having already updated the Xbox X account’s name and username to XBOX.
So how is the internet reacting to this unexpected Friday night rebrand? On X, there’s a fair amount of enthusiastic praise. Over on Bluesky, however, the change is being met with relentless mockery.
One user posted: “Xbox is XBOX / baby gronk is the new rizz king / zendaya is meechee.” Another, Mat Piscatella, joked: “Need someone with the corporate style guidelines to confirm because this could be a real dicey Lego vs LEGO situation and I really don’t need any more emails.” James Wood simply wrote: “I feel like I’m on the Truman Show.” A user named NeoGameSpark shared a tearful reaction: “holding back tears Now this is an XBOX.” Journalist Paul Tassi bluntly declared: “I am not writing that shit in my headlines.” On the supportive side, HaileyEira commented: “this girl is making moves xbox has needed for years. even something as simple as bringing back the full uppercase XBOX makes the brand look like a total beast again. it’s bold, confident. and exactly how it should’ve always looked.” Logan Meyer added: “Combine the new logo with the original font and ALL CAPS. Perfection 💯.” And Rebs Gaming noted: “FYI Asha Sharma updated her LinkedIn profile to confirm the rebrand to XBOX. #XBOX.”
My personal favorite came from Bobby Pashalidis on Bluesky: “How many articles are we gonna see about this?” At least one more, my friend.
I understand the cynics among you questioning why this even qualifies as news. But I don’t control the news, and I especially don’t control the BIG news. For those on Bluesky and X asking “Why?”, I’d point you to longtime VP of marketing at XBOX, AARON GREENBURG.
Is this actually significant beyond the echo chamber of overly online console warriors? Kind of. Just imagine the poor, underpaid intern tasked with changing every Xbox social media account to XBOX this week. And I can hardly wait for the flood of all-caps press releases we’re bound to see at next month’s Microsoft gaming showcase.
