Google has officially begun rolling out a new Quick Share feature that enables Android users to transfer files to iPhones using QR codes. The update arrives just days after the company previewed the functionality during The Android Show: I/O Edition, fulfilling its promise to expand cross-platform sharing capabilities.

Here’s how it works: an Android user generates a QR code via Quick Share, which the iPhone recipient scans using the native Camera app. After scanning, the file is uploaded to the cloud, encrypted end-to-end, and made available for transfer , no third-party app required on the iPhone side. The Android device displays a prompt confirming that the files are secure and remain shareable for up to 24 hours.

We tested the feature, and it performs exactly as described. This QR code approach is particularly useful for Android phones that lack built-in Quick Share-AirDrop compatibility. Rather than relying on direct device-to-device connections, the system uses cloud transfers as a bridge between the two operating systems.

Google confirmed the rollout began on May 12, with all Android phones receiving the update over the next month. If you don’t see the option yet, don’t worry , the feature is still spreading.

In addition, Google reaffirmed that native Quick Share-AirDrop support will soon extend to more flagship devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, S24 series, Z Flip7, Z Fold7, Z Flip6, Z Fold6, and Z TriFold, as well as the OPPO Find X8 series, OnePlus 15, HONOR Magic V6, and HONOR Magic8 Pro.
