Tired of billionaire-run platforms but overwhelmed by the choices in the decentralized social media world? A new app called Indigo launched today, offering a single interface to explore the open social web across multiple networks.
The push for decentralized social media is gaining real traction as users seek control over their algorithms, feeds, and moderation. But the landscape is fragmented. You can join Mastodon, built on the older ActivityPub protocol (which also powers Meta’s Threads), or opt for the newer Bluesky, running on the AT Protocol. Indigo eliminates the need to pick sides.
Instead, Indigo merges these separate ecosystems into one cohesive experience. It provides a unified timeline that syncs across devices and a composer that lets you cross-post to both Bluesky and Mastodon simultaneously.
The app comes from Soapbox Software, the team behind the cross-posting tool Croissant. Co-creator Ben McCarthy told TechCrunch that Indigo builds on Croissant’s foundation, adding features that make it a strong standalone app for users of both networks.
Visually, Indigo makes it easy to tell posts apart. Bluesky profiles are outlined in blue, while Mastodon profiles appear in purple. The app also offers practical controls: auto-scroll to new posts, hide NSFW content, mute users or keywords, filter replies, and a dark mode.
Through the app’s “more” menu, you can access custom feeds and lists from both networks, track notifications across services, and use a universal search to find content on Bluesky and Mastodon.
Key features like cross-posting, timeline syncing, and trend tracking require a paid subscription: $4.99 per month or $34.99 per year. A $119.99 one-time purchase is also available for dedicated open social web users. Indigo currently works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
