Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged during Thursday’s earnings call that it could take “several months” to satisfy the surging demand for the Mac Mini, the company’s powerful, screenless desktop computer. This admission follows a period where developers recognized the Mac Mini as an ideal machine for agentic AI tasks, driving unexpected interest.
“On the Mac Mini and Mac Studio, both of these are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools,” Cook said in response to analyst questions. “And customer adoption of that is happening faster than we expected.”
This update comes during another record-setting quarter for the company. While iPhone sales fell slightly short of projections, demand for the iPhone 17 has been exceptionally strong, and Apple’s subscription services segment continues to expand.
Apple experienced supply constraints across both its iPhone and Mac product lines this quarter. iPhone shortages mainly stem from limited availability of advanced chips. However, Cook clarified that at least two distinct factors are driving Mac shortages: the rapid adoption of generative AI and unexpected demand for the new, colorful, and more affordable MacBook Neo laptop.
Mac sales typically represent a small portion of overall revenue,$8.4 billion this quarter compared to nearly $57 billion for the iPhone, and the Mac Mini accounts for just a fraction of that. Yet with the launch of OpenClaw earlier this year, an open-source AI tool, Mac Minis began selling rapidly because they offer sufficient power and a dedicated computing environment for agentic AI tasks.
Some customers have already been waiting months for their Mac Minis. MacRumors reported in early March that Apple stopped selling a configuration with 512 GB of memory. As of last week, the base model Mac Mini was completely sold out.
Cook, along with his soon-to-be successor John Ternus, also addressed Cook’s transition out of the CEO role later this year. Cook said on the earnings call that it is the “right moment” to move into the executive chairman position for a “number of reasons,” including Apple’s strong financial position and an “incredible” upcoming product road map. He described Ternus as a “person of remarkable character and a born leader.”
Ternus briefly joined the call to vouch for Cook as a business leader and to assure investors he would adopt a similarly deliberate and thoughtful approach in leading the company. He also referenced the company’s road map.
Both men offered few details about this supposedly exciting product road map, but hopefully it includes more… road Macs.
