It is a familiar story: marketers were among the first to fall in love with generative AI. We opened a chat window, typed a prompt, and received something that felt like magic. We had the “wow” moments early, weaving large language models into our daily routines. By almost any metric, marketing led the initial AI adoption curve.

Then, somewhere along the line, we stopped evolving.

Eighteen months later, a surprising number of marketing teams are still doing exactly what they did on day one. They open a chat, type a request, edit the output, and move on. The workflow has not changed. The only difference is that we swapped a blank page for a draft. Everything else remained frozen in place.

Why marketing got stuck with AI

The stagnation happened for understandable reasons. Inertia is a powerful force; it is simply easier to keep doing things the same way. Early outputs also burned trust. The first time you asked an AI to write something genuinely important and it hallucinated facts, used a competitor’s name, or produced something painfully generic, you learned a lesson. You learned to keep AI on a short leash, using it only for low-stakes drafts while keeping real judgment firmly in human hands. That was a rational response at the time. The problem is that the lesson hardened into a permanent habit.

Another factor was that nobody owned AI adoption within most marketing organizations. Usage grew like kudzu: everywhere and without structure. The best part is that you do not need to know how to build it. You can simply put the context into the LLM, tell it what you are trying to do, and have it suggest the best approach. It does not always get it right the first time. But we have come a long way since November 2022.

What these new approaches require is a willingness to redesign workflows and push past the chatbot ceiling.

The bottom line

I know the reflex. I have felt it myself. Wait until it is more reliable. Wait until there is a best practice. Wait until someone else proves it out. It takes too long to build an automation.
