General Motors is taking a major step forward in connected vehicle technology by integrating Google’s Gemini AI assistant into roughly four million vehicles nationwide. The upgrade applies to model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models equipped with Google built-in functionality. According to GM’s official announcement, the rollout will occur through over-the-air software updates to the company’s infotainment system, with the process spanning “over several months.”

GM describes this initiative as “one of the largest deployments of Gemini in the industry.” The company emphasizes that “customers will notice an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to a smarter, more intuitive AI assistant that continues to improve over time.” That means drivers can expect a more natural, conversational interaction when performing tasks like sending messages, navigating, or receiving music recommendations. Instead of memorizing rigid voice commands, users can simply ask questions or make requests in plain language. Initially, Gemini will be available in US English, but GM has indicated plans to expand into “additional GM markets and support more languages over time.”

In a related milestone, GM also announced that customers using Super Cruise, its advanced driver-assist system, have collectively driven one billion hands-free miles. That benchmark covers nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles. While the system is not fully autonomous, it allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on compatible highways across the United States and Canada. This achievement suggests that Super Cruise could pose a serious competitive challenge to Tesla’s driver-assist offerings.
