Elon Musk Tells Jury His Only Goal Is Saving Humanity

▼ Summary

– Elon Musk is on the stand in a trial against OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, positioning himself as a savior by recounting his origin story and framing his ventures as concerned with humanity’s well-being.
– Musk described founding SpaceX as “life insurance for life as we know it” and Tesla to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, dubiously claiming he founded Tesla.
– He expressed long-standing worries about AI being a “double-edged sword” and co-founded OpenAI to steer AI toward a utopian future rather than a dystopian one.
– Musk cast himself as a hero who cares about humanity and directly accused Altman of being a thief, stating it’s not okay to “steal a charity.”
– The article notes that Musk did not tell the jury that most of his foundation’s philanthropic donations have gone to interests closely tied to his own.

In a dramatic courtroom showdown, Elon Musk is painting himself as humanity’s last line of defense. During the high-stakes trial against his former OpenAI co-founder and current CEO Sam Altman, Musk took the stand to frame his entire career as a mission to protect civilization.

The world’s richest man opened his testimony by tracing his journey from a childhood in South Africa to arriving in Canada for college with just “2,500 in Canadian travelers’ checks and a bag of clothes and books.” He spent an unusually long stretch recounting his past, from Zip2 to PayPal to the companies he now leads. Why such a deep dive into his origin story? Because Musk wants the jury to see every venture as a humanitarian effort. SpaceX was founded as “life insurance for life as we know it.” Tesla was created because continued reliance on fossil fuels “could be pretty bad for the environment and humanity as a whole.” (On the stand, he made the questionable claim that he founded Tesla.)

Musk told the court he has worried about artificial intelligence since his college years, describing it as a “double-edged sword” that could either “solve all the diseases and make everyone prosperous, or it could kill us all.” He framed AI’s potential outcomes as a choice between the utopian Star Trek future and the dystopian Terminator one. His goal, he insisted, was to steer toward Gene Roddenberry’s vision, not James Cameron’s. That was the very reason he co-founded OpenAI.

By casting himself as the hero who cares about humanity, Musk is positioning Altman as the opposite. This could be a powerful contrast, especially since Altman’s background co-founding the now-forgotten social media app Loopt and his time as a partner at Y Combinator might sound far less noble.

Musk went further, accusing Altman of theft. “It’s very simple: it’s not okay to steal a charity. That’s my view and moreover if the defendants are found not guilty, this case will become caselaw. It will become precedent and give precedent to looting every charity in America,” Musk said. “If the verdict comes out that makes it okay to loot a charity, the entire foundation of charitable giving in America will be destroyed.”

Notably, Musk did not mention to the jury that most of his own foundation’s philanthropic donations have gone to causes closely tied to his personal business interests.
