Amazon’s Color Kindle Finally Gets System-Wide Dark Mode

▼ Summary

– System-wide dark mode is coming to the Kindle Colorsoft and Scribe Colorsoft via a software update rolling out in the coming weeks.
– Previously, the color E Ink Colorsoft devices could only invert ebook pages, not the entire user interface like black-and-white Kindles.
– Users can specify which sections of the UI use dark mode, such as the homescreen, library, and reading, while keeping notebooks in normal light mode.
– The Scribe Colorsoft’s notebooks are gaining Smart Shapes, allowing users to add predefined shapes like lines, arrows, and circles from the toolbar.
– A new hold-to-snap feature converts freehand-drawn lines, circles, triangles, or rectangles into precise shapes to keep notes neat.

Amazon is bringing system-wide dark mode to its color E Ink devices, a feature that was previously limited to the company’s black-and-white Kindle lineup. The update will apply to both the Kindle Colorsoft and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which feature color E Ink screens. Until now, these devices could only invert the pages of ebooks, leaving the rest of the user interface unchanged.

The software patch, which Amazon says will roll out globally in the coming weeks, allows users to invert the entire interface , not just reading pages. This means the home screen, library, and settings menus can all display white text on a black background. Users can also customize which sections of the device use dark mode. For example, you could enable it for the home screen and reading while keeping the Scribe’s notebooks in standard light mode.

Alongside the dark mode update, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is gaining a new Smart Shapes feature for its notebooks. From the toolbar, users can insert predefined shapes such as lines, arrows, circles, triangles, and rectangles into handwritten notes and sketches. A hold-to-snap option will also convert freehand drawings into precise versions of those shapes, helping keep notes clean and consistent without sacrificing the natural feel of handwriting.

Amazon has not specified an exact release date for the update but confirmed it will be available for download through its website in the coming weeks.
