The RCS encryption upgrade is a critical security enhancement. When implemented, it will ensure that messages exchanged between compatible iOS 26.5 and Android devices are fully secured during transmission, preventing any third party from intercepting and reading the content. This feature was initially tested during the iOS 26.4 beta period but was ultimately held back from the final public version last month, making its arrival in this update a notable development.
Concurrently, Apple is preparing for the rollout of ads in its Maps application. The company confirmed last month that local ads in Apple Maps will launch in the United States and Canada starting this summer. To comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union, Apple is using the iOS 26.5 beta to extend certain iPhone functionalities to third-party accessories. This includes making features like notifications, Live Activities, and simplified pairing processes, similar to those for AirPods, available for compatible non-Apple smartwatches and headphones within the EU market.
