The anonymous social platform Fizz has marked a significant milestone with its first international launch, entering the Saudi Arabian market after establishing a strong presence on hundreds of U.S. college campuses. This move represents a strategic shift for the company as it activates its Global Fizz feed, a feature designed to expand the app’s user base beyond university communities. Founder and CEO Teddy Solomon expressed surprise at the immediate traction, noting the app reached the number one overall spot on Saudi Arabia’s App Store within two days of its quiet mid-March debut and has maintained a top position in the news category. User engagement has been substantial, with over one million messages sent in the platform’s first week.

Solomon emphasized that this international step aligns with the company’s broader ambition. “We’ve always known that our big goal is to be a generational social product, rather than a college social app, and now we’re finally executing on it,” he stated. The Global Fizz feed functions by creating location-based communities, allowing anyone to join. While users can post with a handle, the option for complete anonymity remains a core feature. The model draws comparisons to Reddit’s main feed but does not include the ability to form topic-specific sub-communities.

The decision to launch in the Kingdom stemmed from Solomon’s observations during a trip to Dubai, where he recognized the region’s potential. To facilitate the expansion, Fizz marketing analyst Michael Fonseca relocated to Saudi Arabia to build local connections and deepen cultural understanding. Solomon noted the analyst was warmly received and described the country as currently “jumping,” with a booming business and social landscape where platforms like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and TikTok are immensely popular.

This vibrant social environment is partly a result of deliberate national reforms. The Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aims to diversify the economy away from oil dependence. This modernization drive has included social changes, such as allowing women to drive, and significant investments in Western tech firms. The recent creation of a state-funded AI company called Humain further underscores this technological focus.

However, the nation remains an absolute monarchy with a record of suppressing free speech. The government’s authority extends to monitoring online discourse, removing content, and prosecuting users. Amnesty International reported that in 2024, activist Manahel al-Otaibi received an 11-year prison sentence for social media posts about women’s rights. Operating within this context means Fizz must navigate the risk that authorities could demand content removal or pursue users based on their anonymous posts.

When questioned about the company’s contingency plans for such scenarios, Solomon admitted there is no clear protocol. “The answer is, [we will] cross that bridge when we get there,” he said. He expressed confidence in the platform’s strict content moderation and community guidelines, asserting the company is committed to satisfying local users and abiding by regional and national rules. Solomon clarified that Fizz has not received any Saudi investment nor been in communication with government officials.

To manage its new community, Fizz has invested in Arabic natural language processing tools for AI moderation and recruited hundreds of volunteer moderators from within the Saudi user base. This dual approach mirrors its strategy on college campuses, combining automated systems with human moderators who understand local cultural nuances. Solomon praised the dedication of these volunteers, noting their care for the community and pride in their country. “They want to keep the platform safe, and they take a lot of honor in doing so,” he added.
