Rivian’s latest over-the-air software enhancement, version 2026.03, delivers a significant performance boost and new convenience features to its entire lineup of R1 electric vehicles. This update democratizes exciting driving modes and introduces a clever Apple Watch integration, ensuring both new and older models benefit from the company’s continuous improvements.

A standout addition is the new dedicated Apple Watch app, which significantly enhances convenience for drivers. This app allows owners, particularly those with first-generation vehicles, to use their smartwatch as a functional digital key. By simply tapping the watch screen, users can lock or unlock their R1T or R1S. With the app active, drivers can even start their vehicle and drive away without needing a traditional key fob or their iPhone nearby, as the connection operates via Bluetooth.

Perhaps the most thrilling news for driving enthusiasts is the expansion of Sport Mode. Previously reserved for higher-performance variants, this feature is now available across all Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations, including both Gen 1 and Gen 2 models with different battery types. Engaging Sport Mode unlocks optimized power delivery for quicker acceleration. Furthermore, all compatible vehicles can now maintain a “Standard” ride height in this mode, whereas the suspension would automatically lower before.

Launch Mode, designed for maximum acceleration from a standstill, is also seeing wider availability. Initially exclusive to second-generation Quad-Motor vehicles, this feature is now extended to first-generation Quad-Motor models and both generations of the Dual-Motor Performance variants. Activating it is straightforward: select Sport Mode, press the flag icon, and then simultaneously hold the brake and accelerator pedals.

Beyond performance, the update refines several other vehicle systems. The Kneel Mode, which lowers the vehicle for easier entry and exit, now includes an even “Lower” setting for an approximate extra inch of drop. For drivers using advanced assistance systems, changing drive modes or other settings will no longer automatically disengage Highway Assist or Universal Hands-Free features.

Rivian has also focused on cold-weather functionality with this release. Drivers will now see a clear indicator on the display and in the Energy App showing how much energy is being used to warm the battery. A blue shading graphic will appear if some driving range is temporarily limited until the battery reaches its ideal temperature. The company has also improved battery warming efficiency during charging sessions, helping recover range more effectively and precondition the battery for peak performance.
