For those who love the unique texture of chewable nugget ice but lack the expansive kitchen real estate for a bulky appliance, GE’s latest announcement offers a compelling solution. The company has introduced two new, more compact versions of its popular Opal ice maker, designed to save precious counter space while also carrying more accessible price points. These new models, the GE Profile Opal Mini and the GE Profile Opal Mini Pro, produce the same soft, chewable ice, often called pellet ice, that has become a favorite for its ability to cool beverages rapidly due to its increased surface area.
This style of ice was once a rarity found primarily in restaurant soda fountains. GE brought the experience home with its first Opal machine in 2015. Recent flagship models, however, have commanded a premium, with the Opal 2.0 Ultra starting at $579. The new Mini models aim to democratize access. The entry-level GE Profile Opal Mini is anticipated to retail for $299 upon its release, projected for July 2026. Its sibling, the GE Profile Opal Mini Pro, will be priced at $379.
A key design shift enables the smaller footprint of the base Opal Mini. It eliminates the side-mounted water tank found on larger models in favor of a built-in reservoir that is filled from the top. Despite its compact size, it maintains a robust output, capable of producing up to 34 pounds of ice per day with consistent refilling. It includes a water filter to enhance ice taste and an automatic descale function. It’s worth noting that, as with previous models, routine cleaning can be a meticulous process, a point highlighted in reviews of the Opal 2.0 Ultra.
The step-up Pro model addresses the frequent refilling required by the Mini by reintroducing a side water tank, though this does increase its overall footprint slightly. It also features a specialized filter intended to reduce scale buildup, comes with a stainless steel ice scoop, and offers more premium stainless steel finishes, with final color options still to be determined. A significant upgrade is the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows users to schedule ice-making cycles through a mobile app and receive maintenance alerts directly to their phone, adding a layer of smart convenience to the classic nugget ice experience.
