Nestled in the Ardennes forest, this historic ribbon of asphalt is revered by drivers and fans alike. Yet, as Sunday’s race starkly demonstrated, today’s F1 cars are fundamentally mismatched with the venue’s dramatic demands.

The core issue lies in the sport’s 2026 power unit regulations. As witnessed earlier this year at Suzuka in Japan, a modern F1 battery can sustain the car’s electric motor for only a handful of seconds per lap. For the vast majority of a tour around Spa, these energy-depleted machines deliver less power to the rear wheels than cars in the junior F2 feeder series. This creates a paradox: the pinnacle of motorsport, struggling to maintain pace on one of its most legendary circuits.

Spa-Francorchamps holds an almost mythical status. Many on the current grid consider it the greatest race track on Earth. Its history predates the F1 World Championship itself, with the first Belgian Grand Prix held in 1922. Originally, the circuit was a brutal 9-mile loop of public roads, winding through the towns of Malmedy and Stavelot before returning to Francorchamps. After World War II, the layout was trimmed slightly to 8.7 miles (14.1 km), but it remained ferociously fast, with average lap speeds hitting 150 mph (240 km/h). It was also ferociously dangerous, pairing immense power with minimal safety features.

The Spa we recognize today was reshaped in 1979, cutting the original layout roughly in half. Even so, at 4.3 miles (6.9 km), it remains the longest circuit on the F1 calendar. Remarkably, sections of the track continued to serve as public roads until the year 2000, when it became a dedicated racing facility. Its signature corners, Eau Rouge and Raidillon,a quick left-right sweep climbing 77 feet (24 m) of steep hill,are legendary. But in the modern era of high-downforce machinery, other bends like Pouhon have emerged as even sterner tests of a driver’s nerve and skill.
