Mistral AI has expanded its operational footprint with the acquisition of Pimento, a Paris-based generative adtech firm specializing in automated advertising content creation. This move marks the French artificial intelligence leader’s third strategic purchase this year, signaling an aggressive push to bolster its internal capabilities and product offerings. The transaction was initially reported by L’Informé on Monday and subsequently confirmed by Mistral to AFP, which cited a deal value of “several million euros”.

Financial details regarding the acquisition remain somewhat divergent among media outlets. L’Informé suggested a price point of approximately €3.8 million. However, Sifted, citing reviewed documents, reported a significantly higher valuation of €12.7 million in combined cash and shares. While Sifted’s figure explicitly includes equity components, it remains unclear whether the lower estimate from L’Informé accounts for stock options. Mistral has not officially validated either number, and independent verification is currently unavailable.

The primary driver behind this acquisition appears to be human capital rather than existing client relationships. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicated to L’Informé that Mistral prioritized the technical expertise of Pimento’s developers over its established customer base. Consequently, Pimento’s staff will integrate into Mistral’s engineering and product divisions, specifically targeting the enhancement of Vibe, the company’s conversational assistant previously known as Le Chat. Co-founder Florent Facq reinforced this direction on LinkedIn, stating that the team will concentrate on refining Vibe’s user experience.

Despite the focus on talent, Pimento maintains a substantial market presence. Its platform serves more than 180 brands, utilizing software to transform campaign briefs, brand identities, and data into visual assets and short animations for social media channels. This commercial success contrasts with the company’s origins; founded in October 2022 by Florent Facq and Tomás Yany, a former Apple AI researcher, Pimento initially operated as a moodboarding tool for creative teams.

The startup secured €3 million in seed funding in December 2023, led by Partech and Cygni Capital. Notable angel investors included Julien Chaumond, co-founder of Hugging Face, and Stanislas Polu, co-founder of Dust.

This acquisition occurs shortly after Mistral announced a massive €3 billion Series D funding round on September 8. Led by Samsung Electronics, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads, the investment valued the company at over €21 billion. Mistral described this as the largest equity raise ever recorded for a European technology firm.

Pimento joins a selective roster of recent acquisitions aimed at diversifying Mistral’s technological infrastructure. In February, the company acquired Koyeb, a Parisian serverless cloud platform, to enhance its Mistral Compute services. By May, Mistral had also integrated Emmi AI, an Austrian startup focused on physics simulation models for industrial engineering, bringing over 30 scientists to its research groups. Each acquisition has targeted a distinct sector: cloud infrastructure, industrial simulation, and now consumer-facing assistants. This final segment places Mistral in direct competition with industry giants like ChatGPT and Gemini.

While Pimento is the first of these three entities to offer products tailored to marketers, the fate of its current advertising tools and existing client contracts remains uncertain. Neither party has clarified how the ad business will be managed post-acquisition. For now, the emphasis lies on integrating personnel into the development of Vibe, with the financial terms likely being negligible relative to Mistral’s recent multi-billion-euro valuation boost.
