OpenAI is bringing Codex to your pocket. A new update to the ChatGPT mobile app now enables remote access to Codex for Mac directly from iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, giving users a fresh way to stay productive on the go.

Codex, which operates as a standalone application on macOS, is now embedded within the ChatGPT mobile experience. “Codex is now in the ChatGPT mobile app so you can stay in the loop from anywhere while Codex gets work done across your laptops, devboxes, or remote environments,” OpenAI announced today.

The company highlights how this feature is designed for a new rhythm of collaboration. As AI agents take on longer-running tasks, users need to quickly answer questions, review findings, change direction, or approve next steps without being tied to a desk. “Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app is a fully-featured mobile experience for getting work done with Codex,” OpenAI explains. “When you connect to any of your machines where Codex is running, the app loads the live state from that environment so you can work fluidly across active threads, approvals, plugins, and project context.”

Getting started is straightforward. On the Mac app, Codex presents a QR code that you scan using the ChatGPT app on iPhone, iPad, or Android. Once connected, the mobile interface mirrors the live state of your Codex environment.

OpenAI emphasizes that this is more than basic remote control. From your phone, you can work across all your threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start new projects. Your files, credentials, permissions, and local setup remain securely on the machine where Codex operates, while updates like screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals stream to your phone in real time.

The Codex remote access feature is available now through the latest versions of Codex for Mac and ChatGPT for iOS and Android. OpenAI has confirmed that support for remotely controlling Codex on Windows will follow soon.

This mobile update arrives on the heels of several recent enhancements. Last month, Codex on the Mac gained the ability to use apps without taking over the cursor, allowing users to run tasks while still working on their machine. OpenAI also recently launched a subscription plan tailored for Codex users, alongside the release of GPT-5.5 and Images 2 for image generation. Codex itself only debuted on the Mac in February, having started as a command-line interface tool.

Today’s rollout is available as a preview on iOS and Android across all supported regions.
