An individual is in custody after an early morning attack targeting the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and subsequent threats made at the company’s headquarters. San Francisco police arrested the suspect following the incident, which occurred just before 4:00 AM Pacific Time on Friday. According to an internal security message sent to employees, an unidentified person approached Altman’s residence and threw an incendiary device, which landed nearby and burned out without causing injuries or significant damage.
Shortly after the attack at the residence, security personnel encountered an individual matching the suspect’s description outside OpenAI’s Mission Bay headquarters, referred to internally as MB1. The person made threatening statements about the building. The company’s corporate security team is fully cooperating with law enforcement on the ongoing investigation. Employees were advised they might notice an increased police and security presence and were specifically told not to allow anyone to tailgate into the building. The offices remain open for business.
In a statement, OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood confirmed the events, noting that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Altman’s home and threats were made at the San Francisco headquarters. She expressed gratitude for the swift response from the San Francisco Police Department and the city’s support in keeping employees safe, confirming the individual is in custody and the company is assisting with the investigation.
This event marks the latest in a series of security incidents involving OpenAI’s premises and personnel. In November of last year, the company locked down its San Francisco office due to an alleged threat from an activist. More recently, in February 2025, protesters were arrested for locking the front doors of the OpenAI office. The San Francisco Police Department has not yet provided additional public comment on the latest arrest.
