Apple’s 3-Year iPhone Reinvention Plan Begins

Apple has reportedly embarked on a multi-year strategy to fundamentally transform its flagship product. According to a recent report, this three-year roadmap for reinventing the iPhone is a key priority for senior leadership, including hardware engineering head John Ternus, a leading contender to eventually succeed Tim Cook as CEO. The plan, which began its rollout last year, outlines a series of major hardware innovations scheduled through 2027.

The initiative launched in September 2025 with the introduction of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. These models debuted a new aluminum design featuring a distinct camera plateau and a rear Ceramic Shield glass area dedicated to MagSafe. That same launch also saw the debut of the ultra-slim iPhone Air, establishing a new standard for thinness in the lineup.

This year, the tech giant is poised to enter a new product category with its long-anticipated foldable iPhone. Expected to resemble a book-style design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, the device will offer a large interior screen optimized for media consumption, gaming, and productivity. The accompanying iOS 27 software is anticipated to introduce exclusive multitasking features, such as side-by-side app functionality, bringing an iPadOS-like experience to the foldable form factor. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the device will feature a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID, along with a dual rear camera system. While early rumors suggested a virtually crease-free inner display, more recent reports indicate Apple is utilizing technology that significantly reduces, but does not fully eliminate, the visible crease.

Looking ahead to 2027, Apple is planning a special 20th-anniversary iPhone model. Previous indications point toward an extremely ambitious seamless design, potentially featuring a curved glass enclosure and a display completely free of cutouts. To accomplish this, Apple would need to successfully implement an under-screen front camera, a significant technical hurdle that remains unconfirmed for the final product.

This aggressive innovation push comes as the iPhone business continues to demonstrate remarkable strength. Apple recently posted record quarterly revenue of $143.8 billion, with iPhone sales contributing an all-time high of $85.2 billion. CEO Tim Cook described the demand as “simply staggering,” exceeding the company’s own internal forecasts. The forthcoming foldable iPhone and the visionary 20th-anniversary iPhone are clearly intended to build upon this formidable momentum and redefine the smartphone experience for the next decade.
