Windows 11 26H2 launch imminent, Microsoft details upgrade process

▼ Summary
– Windows 11 version 26H2 is the next feature update, and devices on 24H2 or 25H2 can upgrade using a small enablement package.
– The update is being tested with Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel and is described as a low-disruption release for organizations.
– Versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch, allowing upgrades via a 174 KB enablement package that activates dormant features.
– Systems running Windows 11 23H2 or older require a full update, which needs 6.5 GB of download data.
– Microsoft has not announced changes to hardware requirements or a general availability date, but previous H2 updates launched in the fall.
Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows 11 version 26H2 will serve as the next major feature update, with a streamlined upgrade path for devices already running version 24H2 or 25H2. The update will be delivered through a compact enablement package (eKB) , bypassing the need for a full system download.
The announcement aligns with the start of testing for Windows 11 26H2 among Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. “The next annual update for Windows 11 is coming soon and is already available to Windows Insiders!,” Microsoft stated. “Windows 11, version 26H2 continues our focus on delivering a predictable, low-disruption update experience for organizations and IT professionals.”
Historically, Windows releases carrying an “H2” tag arrive in the second half of the calendar year. In a supporting move, Microsoft released a new whitepaper detailing its shared servicing model, confirming that versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all operate on the same servicing branch. Because these editions share a common source code, security update baseline, and testing framework, the upgrade can be activated via a small enablement package that simply unlocks dormant features already present on the system.
For devices currently on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the upgrade to 26H2 will require only a quick restart after the enablement package is applied. Once installed, the update activates the new feature set and bumps the operating system’s build number to 26300.
However, systems still running Windows 11 23H2 or older versions do not share the same servicing branch and will need to undergo a full feature update. That route demands approximately 6.5 GB of download data, whereas the enablement package itself is a mere 174 KB. Microsoft has not indicated any changes to Windows 11’s hardware requirements for the 26H2 release.
The company has yet to announce a specific general availability date for Windows 11 26H2, though previous H2 updates have historically rolled out in the fall.
