Android 17 launches with multitasking tools, expanded Gemini features

Google has officially released the final build of Android 17, alongside the updated Wear OS 7, marking a significant step forward in mobile and wearable technology. The rollout begins with Google’s own Pixel devices, paired with a new Pixel Drop that introduces a suite of advanced features. These include support for cutting-edge AI models such as the music-generation tool Lyria 3, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and enhanced speech-to-translation capabilities for the Pixel 10a using AudioLM.

This latest update underscores Google’s strategy of leveraging its Android and Pixel ecosystems to demonstrate its AI leadership. While Apple is preparing for a September public launch of AI upgrades to Siri and iOS 27, Google is already pushing forward with Android 17, focusing on how Gemini can transform creation, communication, and everyday device interactions.

The Pixel Drop brings several notable enhancements. Android Quick Share now works with Apple’s AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and 9a devices, bridging a long-standing compatibility gap. With Gemini Omni, users can edit videos through natural conversation, while Lyria 3 allows anyone to generate original music tracks using text prompts or images within the Gemini app. The Pixel 10a also gains improved speech-to-speech translation via AudioLM.

Beyond AI, Android 17 introduces practical new features. Users can now record a personalized outgoing audio message for callers when they are unavailable, and the “Take a Message” feature is expanding to more global markets. For safety, the Google Pixel Watch gains emergency detection capabilities, automatically contacting emergency services and selected contacts if it detects a car crash, fall, or loss of pulse.

A standout addition is the “bubble bar,” a fresh user interface element that lets you organize, move, and quickly access recent apps as floating bubbles at the bottom of the screen. This design speeds up app interactions and supports multi-app workflows. Social media enthusiasts will appreciate the ability to record themselves with the selfie camera while simultaneously capturing the phone screen, perfect for creating screen reaction videos for platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

Parental controls and security have also been strengthened. The “Mark as Lost” feature in Find Hub, along with Live Threat Detection and other threat defenses, provide peace of mind. Screen time limits and content-filtering tools can now be set with a PIN without requiring a linked Google account. A new foldable gaming mode offers a 50/50 layout with a dynamic game pad, optimizing the experience on foldable devices.

For Wear OS 7, watch owners can receive live updates from phone apps mirrored to their Pixel Watch. Smartwatches will also integrate more seamlessly with Google’s upcoming AI glasses and accessories like headphones. Later this summer, Gemini Intelligence will bring personalized widget creation through simple descriptions and “Personal Intelligence” by connecting Google apps and chat history with Gemini.

Battery life improvements, promising up to 10% longer usage, along with multistep automation, are also part of the new Wear OS update, making the entire ecosystem more responsive and intuitive.
