The latest Google Home update introduces a powerful new feature that lets you tap into Gemini’s camera scene understanding to create automated responses, alongside a broad refresh of the Home app and voice assistant.

The headline addition allows other smart home devices to “use Gemini’s advanced scene understanding from your cameras in smart home automations.” This capability is available for Nest cameras and “select” Gemini Built-in cameras, such as the onn Outdoor Camera Plug-In. A new starter lets you “design automations based on visual insights” and “almost anything happening around your home.” Examples include a red BMW entering the driveway, a specific individual getting out of a car (with Familiar Faces enabled), a car door left open, a raccoon near the trash bin, or an Amazon delivery. To set these up, you simply use natural language prompts to describe the exact event you want to trigger an automation and select which cameras should monitor for it. Google advises using descriptions of clearly visible items and general terms like “person,” “people,” or “someone” for the best results, or enabling Familiar Faces for specific names.

The Google Home app also receives several updates with version 4.17. A more “responsive” Android widget now “ensures your smart plugs, lights, and switches react instantly to your first tap.” Additional improvements include easy Watch Favorites Management on Wear OS, which resolves an issue where watch names and reordering options were missing when editing favorites from your wrist, making it easier to organize devices directly from a Pixel Watch. The Familiar Faces interface has been cleaned up for smoother management, with clearer name suggestions and better-aligned text and buttons. Users can also share feedback about video clips to help Google improve the experience and troubleshoot issues, with the option to share clips for product improvement and AI model training.

On the Gemini for Home voice assistant front, you can now “combine an even broader selection of actions” into a single command, such as “Set a 20 minute timer for the chicken, start the vacuum cleaner, and play some relaxing music.” Other voice updates include more consistent responses for casual language like “set brightness to 0” or “make the living room a little warmer,” ongoing speed upgrades for everyday commands, the ability to silence Gemini’s response without stopping background music, and restored Apple Music playback. Bluetooth pairing reliability has improved, and you can say “pair Bluetooth” to use your speakers or displays as Bluetooth speakers. Response reliability has been enhanced with model updates that reduce instances where Gemini mistakenly claims it cannot perform a supported task. Alarms and timers have been further optimized for speed, with Gemini now better at tracking active timers during conversations and understanding which timer or alarm you are referring to.

The assistant also provides more complete answers for general knowledge, weather, and sports. Finally, Early Access has expanded to all existing users in supported countries and languages, though enterprise and Family Link child accounts are not yet supported.
