PC Makers Begin Responding to Apple’s MacBook Neo

▼ Summary

– Apple’s MacBook Neo surprised the PC industry with its low $600-$700 price point, which undercuts typical competing laptops that compromise on features.
– PC makers are responding with laptops using Intel’s new low-end Core Series 3 processors (Wildcat Lake), built on Intel’s latest architectures and manufacturing process.
– Lenovo has announced IdeaPad Slim models with Wildcat Lake, offering optional upgrades like 16GB RAM and a 120 Hz display.
– Asus and HP have also announced early Wildcat Lake laptops, but most manufacturers are not revealing pricing or availability yet.
– The success of these PCs will depend on their cost, with more details expected at Computex in early June.

It is fair to say that Apple’s MacBook Neo caught the rest of the PC industry off guard. Competitors are accustomed to battling Apple on price and features with premium laptops like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, which typically start at $1,000 or more. But their own $600 and $700 models often involve compromises and cut corners that are far more glaring than anything in the Neo. The CEO of Asus publicly admitted surprise at the laptop’s pricing, while also trying to downplay its value. Meanwhile, a Microsoft-backed study comparing PCs to the MacBook Neo included several machines that cannot match its price unless heavily discounted.

Over the past few weeks, however, PC makers have begun to respond with more deliberate and targeted efforts. These strategies largely center on Intel’s low-end Core Series 3 processors, code-named Wildcat Lake. While Intel’s recent low-end chips have often been rebranded versions of older, less power-efficient parts, Wildcat Lake is a purpose-built budget processor that benefits from Intel’s latest CPU and GPU architectures and its 18A manufacturing process. This should help these chips compete more effectively with the Apple A18 Pro found in the MacBook Neo.

Several early Wildcat Lake systems have already been announced, though not all carry price tags, and many are currently only confirmed for the Chinese market. Lenovo is planning to launch IdeaPad Slim models with the new processors, with optional upgrades such as 16GB of RAM and a 120 Hz high-refresh-rate display. Asus and HP have also announced some early products.

Most manufacturers that have unveiled Wildcat Lake laptops are being cautious about pricing and availability. This is somewhat understandable given ongoing component supply shortages and price volatility. On paper, these systems offer advantages over the MacBook Neo, but plenty of laptops have looked strong on a spec sheet before. Their real appeal will depend entirely on cost. We may learn more about these systems, and other PCs from additional manufacturers, during Computex in early June.
