FSR 3.1 Dropped for PSSR 2.0 in 007 First Light PS5 Pro After Devs Impressed

▼ Summary

– IO Interactive’s James Bond game *007 First Light* will launch on May 27 and use the new PSSR 2.0 algorithm on PS5 Pro for significant visual improvements.
– On other consoles, the game uses AMD FSR 3.1.5, while PC players can activate NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 for optimal image quality.
– The developers report that PSSR 2.0 provided a meaningful jump in image quality, including cleaner, sharper fine detail, and was easy to integrate without per-scene tuning.
– Notable enhancements from PSSR 2.0 include improved dense foliage, cinematic character detail, and reduced shimmering and flickering artifacts.
– The game will release for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 27, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version coming in Q3.

IO Interactive has confirmed that its upcoming James Bond origin story, 007 First Light, will launch on PlayStation 5 Pro with the newly upgraded PSSR 2.0 algorithm, replacing the AMD FSR 3.1.5 solution used on other consoles. The developer detailed the switch in a recent PlayStation Blog post, highlighting how the new upscaling technology delivers a noticeable leap in visual fidelity.

Technical Director Henrik Schlichter explained that the upgraded PSSR provided “a meaningful jump in image quality across the board , cleaner, more stable, and noticeably sharper on the kind of fine detail that’s hardest to get right.” He emphasized that this represents a clear upgrade for PS5 Pro players.

The integration process was remarkably smooth, according to Principal Render Engineer Jon Rocatis. “We integrated upgraded PSSR in about a day and were essentially happy with what we saw straight away,” he said. “No per-scene tuning, no special-case work , it just held up across the whole game. That’s not something we get to say very often about a piece of new tech.” This ease of adoption underscores the maturity of Sony’s upscaling solution.

Specific visual improvements are most apparent in dense outdoor foliage and close-up character details during cinematic sequences. The new algorithm also significantly reduces shimmering and flickering artifacts, creating a more cohesive image in scenes with complex geometry and high-frequency detail. While PC players with NVIDIA hardware can activate DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Dynamic Frame Generation for top-tier image quality (with path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction arriving via a summer update), the PS5 Pro version is shaping up to be the definitive console experience for 007 First Light.

The game launches on May 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. A Nintendo Switch 2 version, which IO Interactive has confirmed is already in good shape, will follow sometime in Q3.
