Arjan Brussee, the co-founder of Guerrilla Games and a former technical director at Epic Games, is spearheading the creation of a new game engine designed as a European alternative to dominant U.S.-based platforms like Unreal Engine and Unity.
In an interview with De Technoloog, Brussee, who also co-founded Boss Key Productions alongside Cliff Bleszinski, revealed that “The Immensive Engine” aims to give studios more development choices that are fully hosted and built in Europe, while adhering to European regulations and guidelines.
“Currently, no one is developing an engine that is entirely European-hosted, constructed by Europeans, and compliant with European rules and standards,” Brussee explained, as transcribed by VGC. He emphasized that the ability to create usable 3D worlds is growing in importance, extending well beyond the gaming industry.
A key differentiator for The Immensive Engine is its AI-first architecture. Brussee noted that existing engines like Unreal were “designed for and by people who interact through a mouse and menu system. Any change requires modifications across the entire engine.”
He sees the rise of AI as a pivotal opportunity. “The evolution of AI demands a fresh approach to developing this kind of critical software. As an industry veteran with a clear vision of how things should operate, I recognize the potential,” Brussee said. “If you implement a smart framework of AI agents correctly, you can effectively accomplish the work of ten to fifteen people.”
While the integration of AI in games remains a contentious topic among players, major gaming companies such as Krafton, Square Enix, and EA have significantly invested in the technology.
