At its Code with Claude developer conference on Wednesday, Anthropic revealed a partnership with SpaceX that grants the AI company full access to SpaceX’s data center in Memphis, Tennessee. CEO Dario Amodei took the stage to confirm that this arrangement is designed to boost usage caps for subscribers on the Pro and Max tiers.
The announcement came with immediate changes. Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s five-hour usage window for both Pro and Max users, eliminated the peak-hour restriction that previously reduced Claude Code limits for those accounts, and increased API rate limits for its Opus model. A table detailing the Opus adjustments appeared in the company’s corresponding blog post.
Anthropic says the deal unlocks more than 300 megawatts of new compute capacity. SpaceX, meanwhile, highlighted the raw power of the Colossus 1 supercomputer at the heart of the agreement. “Colossus 1 features over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including dense deployments of H100, H200, and next-generation GB200 accelerators,” SpaceX stated.
Beyond terrestrial computing, Anthropic also “expressed interest” in collaborating with SpaceX on building multiple gigawatts of orbital compute capacity. This aligns with a growing, though unproven, push toward space-based data centers, driven by the concern that “compute required to train and operate the next generation of these systems is outpacing what terrestrial power, land, and cooling can deliver on the timelines that matter.”
For those following Elon Musk’s recent public statements, the deal may come as a surprise. Until now, Musk had been openly critical of Anthropic. In February, he posted on X that “Anthropic hates Western Civilization,” while sharing a false tweet from former Trump administration official Emil Michael regarding Anthropic’s constitutional guidelines for Claude.
