The next major software update for Apple devices may grant users the ability to select their own default artificial intelligence model. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to open its ecosystem to third-party chatbots, allowing them to power Apple Intelligence features system-wide in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, all expected to launch this fall. Beyond just running Siri, compatible third-party AI models, dubbed “Extensions”,will also be able to handle other Apple Intelligence capabilities such as Writing Tools and Image Playground.
Gurman reports that Apple will also let users assign distinct Siri voices to different AI models. For instance, responses generated by Apple’s own AI could use one voice, while those from a ChatGPT-powered Siri instance could use another. This customization aims to make interactions more personal and intuitive.
To set a preferred AI, users will need to install a compatible app from the App Store. Once installed, they can designate it as their default through the Settings app. Gurman notes that Apple is already internally testing integrations with Google and Anthropic’s AI models. Google’s models, in fact, are the backbone of Apple’s upcoming Siri revamp. Until now, ChatGPT has been the only third-party AI model integrated into Apple Intelligence, but that exclusivity may soon end.
