– Digital Eclipse has indicated a potential future cartridge reprint for Switch could include MK4 on the card.
If you purchased a physical copy of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection for the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, you may have noticed a significant omission. The game cartridge does not include Mortal Kombat 4, a fact confirmed by developer Digital Eclipse. The company explained that the Switch build required submission far ahead of the release date, and MK4 simply wasn’t finished in time. As a result, the game is only accessible as a required download for physical edition owners.
Digital Eclipse has been clear in its social media responses, stating, “MK4 did not make it to the Switch cart in time for physical release. The Switch build had to be submitted for production far in advance of the release date, and MK4 was just not ready. All other platforms have MK4 included.” This situation means players must connect their console to the Nintendo eShop and download a patch to add the missing title and performance improvements.
The official Atari store page for the collection now carries a notice specifically for Nintendo Switch users. It encourages them to connect to the Nintendo store to download post-release patches that add MK4 and other enhancements. Our own testing with a physical Switch 2 cartridge confirms this; the cart runs Version 1.0.1 and mandates a day-one update to unlock Mortal Kombat 4 and complete the collection.
This news is particularly disappointing as Digital Eclipse had previously assured fans that the full experience would be contained on the game cartridge. The issue appears exclusive to Nintendo’s platforms. The PlayStation 5 physical release contains every game in the Kollection directly on the disc. Digital Eclipse has indicated that any potential future cartridge reprint for the Switch platforms would aim to include MK4 on the cart itself.
We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates should any significant developments arise regarding the physical release of the Legacy Kollection.
