Google Pixel’s UWB Tracker Flaw: Older Models Struggle

Finding your misplaced keys or wallet just got a bit more complicated for some Google Pixel owners. A recently confirmed limitation means that only the Pro versions of the Pixel 8 and newer can use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for precise item tracking. This restriction leaves users with older Pro models, like the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, unable to take full advantage of this advanced feature, even though their devices contain the required UWB hardware.

Google has not provided a public explanation for why this functionality is disabled on its earlier flagship phones. The company confirmed the limitation to Android Authority, but the reasoning behind the decision remains unclear. Journalists at The Verge have also sought clarification from Google, promising to update their reporting should an official statement become available.

This situation highlights a broader issue of fragmentation within the Android ecosystem for UWB tracking. A support page on Google’s own website clarifies the limited scope of compatible devices. Beyond the newer Pixel 8 Pro, the list includes the Plus and Ultra models from the Samsung Galaxy S21 series and later, alongside select Motorola Edge and Razr phones. For owners of capable but unsupported hardware, this means missing out on the pinpoint accuracy that UWB tracking provides, a feature that could significantly simplify finding everyday items.
