A newly discovered security flaw within the Unity game engine has prompted the temporary removal of several popular titles from the Steam storefront. The vulnerability impacts games developed with Unity versions from 2017.1 onward, affecting platforms including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. While there is no current evidence of the flaw being exploited, developers are taking immediate action to protect users.

Unity confirmed the issue late last Friday, stating a security researcher responsibly reported the vulnerability. The company has already made fixes available to all developers. According to a security advisory, affected applications could be susceptible to unsafe file loading and local file inclusion attacks, potentially enabling local code execution or unauthorized information disclosure.

In response, major publishers like Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment have proactively delisted a number of games. Titles such as the acclaimed medieval mystery Pentiment, Fallout Shelter, Wasteland 3, and Hearthstone are currently unavailable for purchase as developers work to implement the necessary patches. The situation varies by product; for example, only the premium edition of the upcoming RPG Avowed was removed because it included a Unity-based digital artbook, while the standard edition remains on sale.

Some studios have already resolved the issue. Among Us developer Innersloth acted swiftly to update their game, and Marvel Snap received a rapid patch. Microsoft has gone a step further by recommending players uninstall any affected games, even older, unsupported titles like The Elder Scrolls: Legends and the 2019 re-releases of Doom and Doom II, until secure updates are available.

For most of the delisted games, a return to digital storefronts is expected soon once updates are finalized. In the meantime, players may want to review their installed game libraries to ensure no vulnerable software remains on their systems.
