Amazon has introduced a new generation of its Kindle Scribe devices, headlined by the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which brings a color E Ink screen option to the lineup for the first time. These latest models feature a significant visual overhaul, eliminating the previous asymmetrical chin to create a sleeker, more tablet-like appearance. The screens have grown to 11 inches while remaining glare-free, yet Amazon has managed to reduce both the weight and thickness compared to earlier versions.

The new front light system incorporates numerous tiny LEDs, enabling slimmer bezels and more even illumination across the display. An enhanced glass texture provides greater friction to better mimic the sensation of writing on paper, while reduced gaps between the glass and E Ink layer make pen strokes feel directly connected to the stylus tip. Performance sees notable improvements thanks to a quad-core processor and additional memory, resulting in writing responsiveness and page turns that feel approximately 40 percent quicker.

Software enhancements extend across all three new models. A redesigned home screen now includes a Quick Notes section for spontaneous jottings, with improved access to recently used notebooks and documents. Users can export their handwritten notes as editable text directly to Microsoft OneNote for further refinement on computers, while new integration allows direct access to files stored on Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.

Artificial intelligence plays a larger role in this generation, with expanded search functionality across notebooks and AI-generated summaries. Looking ahead, Amazon plans to introduce a feature next year that will enable users to send their notes to Alexa Plus for interactive discussions about their content. New AI-assisted reading tools include “Story So Far,” which creates spoiler-free recaps of books up to your current reading point, and “Ask This Book,” providing answers based on highlighted text passages. These reading features will initially launch on the Kindle iOS app later this year before arriving on Kindle devices early next year.

The color-enabled Kindle Scribe Colorsoft allows users to draw, write, and annotate using ten distinct pen colors or highlight with five different highlighter shades. Artists will appreciate the new shading tools that create smoother gradients for more sophisticated artwork.

Pricing sees increases across the board. The entry-level Scribe without front lighting starts at $429.99, while the standard front-lit model begins at $499.99. The color-capable Kindle Scribe Colorsoft carries a $629.99 starting price, positioning it above competitors like the Remarkable Paper Pro, though it offers full access to Amazon’s extensive ebook marketplace.

Since its 2022 debut, the Kindle Scribe has evolved from a large-screen e-reader with note-taking capabilities into a more fully-featured digital notebook. Early limitations, such as the inability to directly annotate ebooks, have been addressed through software updates that now include handwriting-to-text conversion, AI document summaries, and persistent notes within ebook files.
