– OnePlus is skipping the number 14, with the OnePlus 15 directly succeeding the OnePlus 13, likely to avoid the unlucky number 4 in Chinese culture.
– The phone’s design resembles the OnePlus 13T/13S, featuring a rounded square camera island and likely replacing the alert slider with a customizable button.
– This model will be the first OnePlus flagship in years without Hasselblad camera processing, as the partnership between the two brands has ended.
– OnePlus is introducing its own new image processing technology called the DetailMax Engine to replace the Hasselblad branding.
The next flagship smartphone from OnePlus will be known as the OnePlus 15, a significant leap in naming that skips the OnePlus 14 entirely. This strategic move was confirmed at a recent Qualcomm event in China, where the company also revealed the device will be powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and feature a high-performance 165Hz refresh rate display.
Skipping from the OnePlus 13 directly to the OnePlus 15 is widely seen as a cultural consideration, as the number four is considered unlucky in many East Asian societies. This naming convention conveniently aligns with Qualcomm’s own progression from the Snapdragon 8 Elite to the 8 Elite Gen 5.
During the presentation, a black model of the OnePlus 15 was showcased. Its design appears to draw more inspiration from the OnePlus 13T (sold as the 13S in India) than from the standard OnePlus 13. The visual similarities include a rounded square camera housing on the back. This design shift also suggests the phone will likely replace the iconic alert slider with a programmable shortcut button, a change first seen on the 13T.
Beyond the processor, display, and name, another major change concerns the camera system. The OnePlus 15 will be the brand’s first top-tier model in several years to launch without Hasselblad-branded imaging software. This follows the announcement by CEO Pete Lau that the five-year collaboration between OnePlus and Hasselblad has concluded. Interestingly, Oppo, OnePlus’s parent company, will maintain its own partnership with the camera brand. To fill the void, OnePlus is introducing its proprietary image processing technology, dubbed the DetailMax Engine, marking a new, independent direction for its photography capabilities.
