DJI has officially unveiled the Osmo Nano, its most compact action camera yet, featuring an impressive 1/1.3-inch sensor capable of recording in 4K at 120fps. This new device shares the same high dynamic range capabilities as the flagship Osmo Action 5 Pro but arrives in a significantly smaller, lighter form factor. Unlike a traditional standalone camera, the Osmo Nano is designed to work with an included modular accessory called the Multifunctional Vision Dock, which provides a touchscreen and extends battery life, a concept familiar to users of products like the Insta360 Go Ultra.
A notable point for potential buyers in the United States is that DJI will not release the Osmo Nano there upon its global launch on September 23. The company’s spokesperson, Daisy Kong, stated that DJI is optimizing its strategy for the U.S. market amid evolving local conditions but remains committed to American customers. The camera is launching in other regions, including Canada, the UK, and several European countries. Pricing starts at $309 USD for the 64GB model, with a 128GB version available for $339.
The pill-shaped Osmo Nano measures just 57mm long and weighs a mere 52 grams, making it one gram lighter than both DJI’s own 2021 Action 2 and the recent Insta360 Go Ultra. Its design is a departure from the square Action 2, which used a magnetic system for attaching various accessories. The Nano can be attached to its Vision Dock in either direction, allowing the integrated OLED screen to be used for framing selfies or standard videos. Even with the dock attached, the total weight reaches only 124 grams, which is substantially less than the 146-gram Osmo Action 5 Pro.
Battery performance is a key consideration for any portable device. On its own, the Nano can record for approximately 55 to 60 minutes in 4K at 30fps. When connected to the Multifunctional Vision Dock, which also acts as a wireless remote with a live preview, that battery life more than doubles to between 125 and 135 minutes. The camera body itself is waterproof down to 10 meters, though the dock has a more limited IPX4 rating, meaning it is only protected against water splashes.
One of the most innovative features is the hands-free control system. Users can start recording by gently tapping the camera or, if it’s mounted on a hat or helmet, by simply nodding their head. This is particularly useful for situations where wearing gloves or handling small buttons is difficult. The Osmo Nano also supports a direct connection for two wireless microphones without an external receiver. An additional pre-record function can save footage from the moments just before the record button is pressed, a handy feature for capturing spontaneous action, though it may have an impact on overall battery endurance.
