YouTube is rolling out a significant set of upgrades to its live streaming capabilities, designed to help creators expand their reach and boost engagement. Announced during the Made on YouTube event, these enhancements include simultaneous horizontal and vertical streaming, AI-generated livestream highlights, and the ability for mobile users to react live to other broadcasts. These changes represent what the platform describes as its most substantial live streaming overhaul to date.

Live content continues to gain traction, with over 30 percent of daily logged-in viewers tuning into livestreams during YouTube’s second quarter. The new dual-format streaming feature allows broadcasters to reach audiences on both mobile and desktop with a single stream, while maintaining a unified chat experience. This functionality is currently in testing and is expected to become more widely available in the coming months.

Creators will be able to monitor both stream layouts directly within Creator Studio to ensure optimal framing.

Another notable addition enables streamers to react in real time to eligible live events directly from their mobile devices. This builds on the established popularity of reaction content while minimizing concerns around copyright and licensing. YouTube plans to begin testing this interactive format early next year.

In the coming weeks, mobile creators will also gain access to AI-powered tools that automatically generate Shorts from livestream highlights. A new practice mode will allow users to rehearse their streams before going live, a feature slated for release later this year. Additionally, YouTube’s Playables games will soon support vertical livestreams, enabling creators to play games while engaging with their audience. This integration will start rolling out next month.

Several updates are specifically aimed at helping creators monetize their content more effectively. A new feature allows those with channel memberships to switch between public and members-only livestreams, incentivizing viewers to subscribe for exclusive access. Ads that currently appear beside streams on desktop and TV will also extend to mobile devices later this year.

According to Aaron Filner, YouTube’s senior director of product management, these improvements are grounded in community feedback and intended to support discovery, channel growth, and revenue. While YouTube has heavily emphasized Shorts in recent years, this renewed focus on live features may help the platform better compete with dedicated livestreaming services.
