Nikon has officially launched the ZR, marking its first co-branded camera developed in partnership with RED since acquiring the cinema-focused company last April. This collaboration brings together Nikon’s imaging expertise with RED’s renowned video capabilities, creating a hybrid tool designed for serious filmmakers and content creators.

The ZR builds on the strengths of Nikon’s Z-mount system, internal RAW video recording, and widely praised color science, taking performance to a new level for videographers. A standout feature is the ability to record RED R3D NE files, which provide exceptional post-production flexibility. With these files, adjustments to ISO and white balance can be made after filming, simplifying the process of matching footage with existing RED projects. This functionality has long been a major draw for RED cameras and now integrates seamlessly into the Nikon ecosystem.

Based largely on the Z6III platform, the ZR incorporates a partially-stacked 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization, and over 15 stops of dynamic range. The body has been streamlined to dimensions of 133×80.5×48.7mm, enhancing portability without sacrificing performance. Additional video-centric upgrades include 32-bit audio output via both the hotshoe and microphone jack, along with a bright 4-inch articulating touchscreen rated at 1000 nits for clear visibility in various lighting conditions.

Priced at $2,199, the Nikon ZR will be available starting October 20th.
