Double Fine Productions is charting a course toward fresh creative horizons, with studio head Tim Schafer confirming that multiple original IPs are currently in development. While the acclaimed studio’s upcoming puzzle-adventure title Keeper launches this October, fans should not anticipate sequels to beloved franchises like Psychonauts or Brutal Legend anytime soon.

In a recent interview, Schafer emphasized that the team is channeling its energy into new concepts rather than revisiting past successes. “The studio is doing multiple projects right now, and they’re all original IPs,” he stated, adding that the extensive effort poured into Psychonauts 2 has satisfied the studio’s appetite for sequels for the foreseeable future.

Schafer himself is personally involved in these new endeavors, having entrusted Keeper’s development to director Lee Petty. This shift in focus allows him to dedicate attention to unexplored ideas and untold stories. That said, he hasn’t ruled out returning to established worlds someday, after all, Psychonauts 2 arrived 16 years after its predecessor.

Although a follow-up to Brutal Legend seems distant, the original title recently enjoyed a resurgence in attention. To honor the legacy of Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne, Double Fine made the game available for free for a symbolic 666 minutes, reigniting interest in the heavy metal-inspired adventure.

As for what’s immediately ahead, Keeper arrives on October 17 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game invites players into a mysterious, long-abandoned lighthouse alongside a courageous seabird, promising a charming and atmospheric journey far from the beaten path of the studio’s previous hits.
