Warframe fans eagerly awaiting a Nintendo Switch 2 version will need to wait a little longer, as developer Digital Extremes cites a shortage of development kits as the primary hurdle. During a recent press Q&A ahead of TennoCon 2025, studio CEO Steve Sinclair confirmed the team’s enthusiasm for optimizing the game for Nintendo’s latest hardware but emphasized they can’t proceed without access to the necessary tools.

The studio, which originally brought the free-to-play action title to the Switch in 2018, remains committed to delivering a custom-built version for the new console. Sinclair highlighted the potential performance upgrades, including faster load times and optimizations for the Switch 2’s advanced hardware. “Our programmers can’t wait to dive in,” he said, though the team remains stuck in limbo due to the ongoing dev kit backlog.

Currently, Warframe remains playable on the Switch 2 through backward compatibility, though some players have reported occasional startup issues. Digital Extremes is investigating these hiccups while keeping an eye on future enhancements. The studio isn’t alone in facing these challenges, numerous indie and third-party developers have also struggled to secure dev kits, delaying potential Switch 2 projects.

The Switch 2 launched earlier this year with a solid lineup of third-party titles, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, but demand for more games remains high. With no clear timeline for when additional dev kits will become available, studios like Digital Extremes are left waiting.

For now, players can still enjoy Warframe on the new hardware via backward compatibility while keeping an eye out for future updates. Meanwhile, the studio continues to explore ways to leverage the Switch 2’s capabilities once the necessary tools arrive.
