The Nintendo Switch 2’s limited third-party game announcements may stem from a shortage of development kits, according to industry insiders. While a few major titles have been confirmed for the upcoming console, many studios reportedly lack access to the hardware needed to create and optimize their games.
A recent discussion by YouTuber Nate the Hate highlighted the growing concern among fans and developers alike. The absence of widespread third-party support has raised questions about when more games will be revealed. Nate pointed out that the issue traces back to GDC 2025, where reports indicated numerous developers, ranging from indie teams to mid-sized studios, still hadn’t received dev kits.
The situation isn’t limited to smaller developers. Even well-established studios working on double-A and lower-budget triple-A projects are reportedly waiting for access. Modern Vintage Gamer, Nate’s co-host, suggested that roughly two-thirds of the teams that previously developed for the original Switch still don’t have the necessary hardware. “Only about a third of developers who worked on Switch 1 titles currently have Switch 2 dev kits,” he noted.
Major publishers like Capcom, Sega, Ubisoft, and Bandai Namco are among those waiting, according to Nate. While these companies have games in the pipeline for the Switch 2, delays in distributing dev kits could push their release plans into 2026. Microsoft’s support for the console may also be affected by these logistical hurdles.
Despite the challenges, some high-profile titles have already made their way to the platform. Games like Fortnite, Hogwarts Legacy, and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition are available now, with Elden Ring Tarnished Edition slated for later this year. However, the broader lineup remains uncertain until more developers gain access to the tools they need.
The shortage raises concerns about the Switch 2’s early adoption phase, particularly as fans eagerly await announcements from third-party studios. Without widespread dev kit availability, the console’s launch window could see fewer exclusive or optimized titles than anticipated. For now, the industry watches closely to see how Nintendo addresses the bottleneck.
