Belkin’s Bricking Trend: Tech Firms Overstep Customer Trust

▼ Summary

– Belkin is discontinuing support for most Wemo smart home products on January 31, 2026, ending core functionality and updates.
– Affected devices will lose cloud-dependent features like remote access and voice assistant integrations after the cutoff date.
– Customers with eligible warranties may receive partial refunds starting February 2026 for impacted devices.
– Only seven of the 27 discontinued devices are compatible with Apple HomeKit, allowing limited continued use without the Wemo app.
– Four Wemo devices, primarily Thread-based, will remain fully functional and unaffected by the changes.

Belkin’s decision to discontinue support for most of its Wemo smart home products has left customers frustrated and questioning the longevity of their tech investments. Starting January 31, 2026, many Wemo devices will lose critical functionality, including remote access, voice assistant integration, and app-based controls. The move affects 27 products, some sold as recently as late 2023, leaving users with limited options unless they act quickly.

In an official statement, Belkin explained that technical support and cloud-dependent features will cease for older Wemo models. This means devices like smart plugs, switches, and dimmers will no longer respond to Alexa commands or function through the Wemo app. Features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, energy monitoring, and security-enhancing “Away Mode” will also disappear. Without updates, these gadgets could become vulnerable to security risks over time.

Customers with devices still under warranty may qualify for partial refunds, but the broader issue remains: tech companies are increasingly rendering perfectly functional hardware obsolete through software shutdowns. While Belkin suggests migrating compatible devices to Apple HomeKit before the cutoff, only seven of the affected products support this workaround.

Four Wemo products will escape the shutdown, including the Thread-based Smart Light Switch 3-Way and Smart Plug with Thread, highlighting Belkin’s shift toward newer standards. For everyone else, the abrupt end of service underscores a growing trend, consumers are losing control over devices they own as companies prioritize planned obsolescence over long-term usability. The fallout serves as a cautionary tale for smart home adopters: buyer beware when investing in cloud-dependent gadgets.
