The recent buzz around Sony’s decision to eliminate physical discs from PlayStation consoles by 2028 has reignited the debate over whether Xbox will follow a similar path. Many fans are urging Microsoft to avoid what they see as a misstep, but the company’s plans for its next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, remain unclear.

Contrary to earlier assumptions that Project Helix would ship without a disc drive, a new report from The Verge suggests that Microsoft has not yet “fully finalised” this aspect of the hardware. “I understand Microsoft hasn’t fully finalized whether the next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, will ship with a built-in disc drive,” the report states, casting doubt on previous claims that a disc-less design was a certainty.

Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who previously indicated that a built-in disc drive was unlikely, has since updated his stance. On the Xbox Two Podcast, Corden noted that Microsoft appears to be reevaluating its approach to physical media for Project Helix. “Tom Warren put in an article [on The Verge] that nothing has been decided for Helix yet. Things had been decided for Helix previously, however Tom had more up to date information that [Microsoft is] now seeing what might be possible about Helix with regards to discs,” Corden said. He added, “I went and tried to update my information, and it does seem like indeed — they are trying to figure out what they can do here before they fully commit to the death of physical discs.”

Despite this, Corden still believes a built-in disc drive won’t be standard. Instead, he speculates that Microsoft could offer a separate add-on disc drive as an optional accessory for the console.

The Verge’s report also highlights a disc-to-digital feature currently in development at Xbox, which would let players convert their physical game collections into digital licenses. This move raises questions about whether Microsoft is preparing for a future where discs are no longer produced or supported.

A recent poll from Pure Xbox found that 49% of voters expect Project Helix to offer, at best, an optional add-on disc drive. As the industry watches closely, Microsoft has yet to make a definitive call. We’ll keep you updated as more concrete details emerge on Xbox’s physical disc strategy for Project Helix.
