Speculation about a summer State of Play has been swirling for weeks, and Sony has finally confirmed the event. The showcase arrives on 2nd June 2026, and it promises to be one of the biggest yet. With a runtime exceeding an hour, a confirmed opening slot for Marvel’s Wolverine, and even theatrical screenings in select US cinemas, anticipation is sky-high.
We don’t have a concrete list of what’s coming, but what kind of PlayStation site would we be without some bold predictions? Here are 17 plausible reveals and surprises we expect to see during the show.
Marvel’s Wolverine looks reliably excellent. It’s Insomniac. When was the last time they made a bad game? This is the only confirmed title for the State of Play, so let’s get it out of the way. After three successful Spider-Man titles, the developer has perfected its superhero formula. We expect a polished, safe, and high-quality showing for Logan’s story. It won’t break new ground, but it will deliver exactly what fans want.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet might finally show gameplay. Announced at The Game Awards 2024, we haven’t seen Naughty Dog’s next project in a long time. Sony already has Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls for this year, but it might be time to look ahead to 2027. We’re desperate for proper gameplay, and a fresh trailer feels likely.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will reveal more characters. The game launches on 9th August, and six roster slots remain unannounced. Expect at least one new team to be unveiled. Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider are confirmed as team leaders, so a full quartet reveal seems almost guaranteed.
Cory Barlog’s next God of War could get a teaser. By all accounts, we’ll be playing a new mythology-hopping adventure starring Kratos’ late wife Faye next year. The title is said to feel like a new IP, another reinvention after the excellent Ragnarok. A 2027 release window makes this the perfect time for a first look.
Break In needs a gentle but firm reveal. Sony read the room with Horizon Hunters Gathering, but public sentiment hasn’t fully recovered. The best way to announce Fairgames’ rebrand as Break In is a shadow drop. A prolonged promo cycle won’t work here.
Media Molecule might finally show its next game. After releasing the brilliant but underperforming Dreams in 2020, live support ended in 2023. That’s a solid development window. Rumours suggest a new IP, a more traditional game, and an open world. We’re hoping for a sneak peek.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword needs a release date. It feels like an eternity since the announcement. Capcom heavily teased something last month but never delivered. This State of Play seems like a solid bet for a new trailer and hopefully a launch window.
Silent Hill: Townfall should continue the series’ strong streak. This indie take on the franchise is slated for a PS5 release this year. Sony backed it in the last State of Play. A final release date would be welcome.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis could appear. It’s equally likely at Summer Game Fest or the Xbox Showcase, but Lara Croft’s return is due later this year. With GTA 6 consuming November, a release date must be imminent. PlayStation is historically linked to this series, so don’t be surprised if Sony has marketing rights.
Final Fantasy 7’s conclusion might not appear. Since Square Enix shifted to multiformat development, the series doesn’t feel tied to PS5 anymore. Announcing the third part of the remake trilogy during a State of Play would be a surprise. However, the fanbase is still heavily on PlayStation. It depends on whether Square Enix wants that venue.
Phantom Blade Zero could drop a PS5 demo. The game creeps toward its September 2026 release date, but we haven’t seen it in a while. Summer is the perfect time to get in front of eyes. A demo announced during the show and available immediately after would be a smart move.
Monster Hunter Wilds’ expansion might get a teaser. Capcom loves State of Play announcements. While the full gameplay reveal will likely be saved for its own event, a short teaser here is plausible. More details could follow at Summer Game Fest.
Forza Horizon 6 could appear. It sounds ludicrous, but Microsoft has dated games during Sony showcases before. Given the strong sales of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, a reveal of the Japan-based racer on Sony’s stage wouldn’t be a massive surprise.
Street Fighter 6’s fourth season might be revealed. Sony has worked hard to align with the fighting game community. While Summer Game Fest is more likely, a State of Play appearance isn’t out of the question. Is Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 joining the roster? We’ll find out this summer.
PS Portal OLED could be announced. Long rumoured, the State of Play might be the right time. With price rises questioning the value of handhelds like the Steam Deck, the Portal is becoming a decent entry-level device. An OLED screen, fast charging, and higher refresh rates could sweeten the deal.
PS Plus hints are a new staple. Sony always teases perks during each State of Play. Expect one or two major titles coming to the service this summer, along with PS Plus Premium hints. With a recent price hike and Days of Play underway, Sony will want to lock in subscriptions.
4Loop will probably be there. We don’t care, you don’t care, but Sony has invested big in Bad Robot Games’ title. It will take every opportunity to show it. Let’s hope the game is starting to take shape, as past showings have been underwhelming. Much like Break In, it’s unclear if this is the right venue, but it is what it is.
That’s our list. What do you think will appear at Sony’s June State of Play? Share your predictions in the comments.
