Windows 11 Boosts Batch File Security in New Tests

▼ Summary

– Microsoft has released new Windows 11 preview builds that enhance security and performance for batch file and CMD script execution.
– IT administrators can enable a secure mode to prevent batch files from being modified during runtime via a specific registry value or application manifest control.
– This secure mode improves performance by requiring signature validation only once per file, instead of for each command, when code integrity is enabled.
– The update also improves the Shared Audio feature by adding individual volume sliders for each listener and a new taskbar indicator for active sessions.
– These features are available to Windows Insiders in specific preview builds and expand support to more Bluetooth LE Audio accessories like certain Samsung, Sony, and Xbox headsets.

Microsoft has introduced a significant security enhancement for batch file processing in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview builds, providing system administrators with greater control over script execution. This update allows IT professionals to activate a more secure mode that prevents batch files from being altered while they are actively running. By implementing a specific registry value or an application manifest control, administrators can lock these files during execution, which is particularly valuable in enterprise settings that depend on automated scripted workflows.

The Windows Insider team emphasized that this change not only strengthens security but also improves performance. When code integrity features are enabled, the system only needs to validate a batch file’s signature once at the start, rather than repeatedly checking each command as it runs. This reduces processing overhead and accelerates script execution, making administrative tasks more efficient and secure.

Beyond these security improvements, the latest preview builds also enhance the Shared Audio feature. Originally launched in October, this functionality lets users stream audio simultaneously to two different output devices, such as headphones, speakers, or earbuds. A key upgrade now provides individual volume sliders for each connected listener and device, moving beyond the previous system where volume changes affected both parties equally. Users will also notice a new taskbar indicator during active sharing sessions, offering a quick visual reminder and easy access to sharing settings with a single click.

Support for Shared Audio has been broadened to include additional Bluetooth LE Audio accessories. Notable additions to the compatible device list are the Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro, the Sony WF-1000XM6 earbuds, and the Xbox Wireless Headset. This expansion gives users more flexibility in choosing their audio gear for shared listening experiences.

These new features are currently available to participants in the Windows Insider Program. Users in the Beta channel who have installed Windows 11 Preview Build 26220.7934 (KB5077242) and those in the Dev channel with Build 26300.7939 (KB5077243) can test these updates and provide feedback before a wider public release.
